Course Description:
This course offers instruction in the practice and
theory of Ballroom style partnership dance. We
shall address the development of movement quality
and performance skill individually, with a partner,
or in a group setting. These dances may include
Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, Salsa, Rumba, Cha-Cha,
Samba, Bolero, & Mambo. Dancing style and technique
will be addressed as well as Lead/Follow
responsibilities. The focus of this course will be
on Social and Club styles of dance.
Objectives:
The object of this course is to create a solid base
of knowledge regarding the dances listed above.
Fundamental elements of these dances such as foot
patterns and body styling will be incorporated into
the students repertoire. The student will begin to
develop the ability to transition from one figure to
another seamlessly during a dance. Interrelated
motions and figures will also become apparent among
the dances. We desire the students to:

Comprehend universal Lead/Follow techniques
required of partnership dance

Identify the basic rhythm and timing of a
specific dance
-
Understand the feel and style for a specific
dance
-
Develop the basics necessary to survive on the
dance floor for an entire song
-
Learn the aspects of Floor Craft required of
specific dance environments
-
Become welcome and positive members of the dance
community
Tactile Teaching Aids:
Partnership dance is a contact sport and thus
requires physical touching. Tactile (touch)
teaching maybe used in this class in order to
further explain concepts relating to posture, dance
frame, position, etc. If you are uncomfortable with
this concept, please advise the instructor
immediately.
Withdrawal Policy:
It is your responsibility to submit a withdrawal
form. You will not be automatically withdrawn from
this course. Refer to the Schedule of Classes for
specific withdrawal deadlines.

Attendance:
This class is a progressive, interactive educational
experience. Students are expected to be on time and
prepared to begin class at the appointed time.
Consistent attendance is critical for both
individual development and the group experience.
Remember, dancing is a partnership of all those
involved.
Sign the roster when you arrive. Failure to do so
will result in NO credit for that day. In the event
of an absence, the student is responsible for the
material missed.
Students are required to attend two extracurricular
dance events over the course of the class.
Grading:
Attendance 5 points for each class attended (75
points possible)
Dance events 5 points each (10 points possible)
Total possible points is 85
Grade scale:
85-80 pts. (A), 75-70 pts. (B), 65-60 pts. (C),
55-50 pts. (D), 45- pts. (F)
Classroom policy:
NO cell phones or other electronic devices, and/or
food are permitted. If you must leave the class
early, be quiet and respectful.
Attire:
Please wear comfortable attire suitable for
dancing. NO flip-flops. Suede soled shoes are
recommended. Please remember that you will be in
close quarters with your dance partners. Attention
to personal hygiene is critical for everyone.
Dance event attendance:
Social dance is best developed and refined through

events from which you may choose to attend during

instruction in Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, and Cha Cha.
Intermediate level social dance figures will be
introduced in these dances. Dance style and
technique will be addressed as well as Lead/Follow

Description: Dance your way to better health by
learning fun and traditional social dance skills. A
challenging workout using dance figures from
Foxtrot, Waltz, Bolero, Salsa, and other dances.
